Does anyone on this forum have any experience with Panga's made by Amato Boats in Ensenada. Ensenada is just across the border from San Diego. Amato has been building Panga's for a very long time and they are typically half the price of the current crop of boats built in the U.S. I am looking for a boat that is more of a utility style rather than slick and shiny since I will hopefully be getting plenty of fish blood and guts in it. A speckle paint job and rolled gunnel are fine by me. My only question is will the boat last for at least ten years. It would be nice to get some feedback from anyone who has first hand experience.

welcome to our little group dont think anyone here has an amato yet a google of amato panga will show lots of satisfied customers they are a very low deadrise v hull of traditional mexican design and quite different to the jap delta pad design arent really comparable other than they are both skinny and have a decent bow so i would decide which way i wanted to go first, jap or mex, then look for a builder both can come in basic speckle website www.geocities.com/amatoboats/amatopicsn.html

I stopped by the Amato factory about 5 years ago. Had a very nice long visit with the owner and his son. They were located on Hwy 1, across from the E. airport where you could see a number of old planes that had made too many flights...
Anyway. Mr. Amato was very eager to build a custom panga for me. Saw several he had built. They looked to be very well made with a heavy hull construction. The finish was below US standards which may account for some of the difference in price.
At that time his only mold was for a 26' panga. If you wanted a shorter panga, he would just plug the stern of the mold to shorten it.
I did not have a panga manufactured Mr. Amato, however, he seamed to know what he was doing.
I have pictures of some of his pangas. Let me know if you want them posted and I will try.
Nice to hear they are still in business..

Jack & Bajadan, Thanks for the response to my questions. I sure would like to see some pictures if you have them and it's not too much trouble for you to post them. From Jack's description of the Amato design I think I would like that shallow deadrise boat as opposed to the delta pad style but I wonder if the boat is a roller on the drift or anchored. A flat bottom aft had it's advantages. I just want a no frills basic fishing machine that will fish inshore flats with the ability to go offshore as well. Being able to beach the boat is a plus as well as a boat that isn't going to cost me a ton of money to buy or run.

I took the top 2 pictures while on my visit to the Amato factory. This was the only boat they were working on while I was there. I have other pictures of Amato boats, however, if you go to the the Amato web site that is linked in Jacks post, you will see many versions of their boat. If you are going to beach launch, you must want a smaller, lighter panga version? Amato makes some large heavy pangas. The picture of the one below is the lightest version I have seen of theirs. Here is a picture of one of their big boys with in I/O engine.. I was told by Mr. Amato that this is another of their boats. Must be a different hull mold???

Bahadan,
Thanks for the pictures. I am not going to beach launch, I just like to be able to comfortably beach a boat to stretch legs, let the kids play, and walk the dog. I have a ramp in my subdivision about 100 yards from my house. The creek that the ramp is on gets pretty shallow in the dry season so I need a shallow draft boat. The creek leads into the Peace River which empties into Charlotte Harbor. A quick run through the harbor leads to the Gulf of Mexico.. From my house it is about a hour run to get out into the gulf by boat. Fortunately the inshore fishing is great but there are times that I would like to do some fishing in the gulf also. There used to be a sales rep in San Diego for Amato boats but I hear he got out of the business. But he used to be able to help you design the interior layout to suit your needs and then take care of the paperwork to get your boat legal in the states. He would then only charge you $200 to transport the boat to San Diego for you to pick up. If memory serves his name was Scott Oswald. This has been a few years back but as I recall the 26 with console, leaning post baitwell, fish holds in the bow, and a fiberglass gas tank under the console was priced around $6,500.

Doug,
Sounds like a very nice setup you have. Being able to launch so close to home. Lots of fun running the little water routes as well.
I did not know about Scott the broker. If Mr. Amato had told me about him I may have an Amato panga now. He was probably trying to eliminate the middle man.
The reason I did not have him build the panga was when I returned home and started to send him drawings and asking questions, we had a communication problem. In person my Spanish was good enough so Mr. Amato and I understood each other. When we went to e-mail the communication broke down. Being 1400 miles away and not able to make frequent trips to babysit the project I did not go through with it. A local broker would have been worth the money..
My memory about the pricing is not so good. Also, the panga version I wanted at that time was a larger version, more like ones in the 3 or 4 picture. With the weather we have in the NW I wanted a cabin. A 26' version was somewhere in the low $20's.
Seams like the $6,500 price was as a tiller model. Believe the CC added about $1,800. The price did include a built in gas tank. I could be off on this info, bad memory and my notes are gone...
Good luck, always fun to shop and build a new boat. From what I saw the Amato panga is very well made. There are quit a few in the S. California area. You may want to search the boats for sale in the San Diego, & LA areas for ideas and pricing..I have seen Amato pangas come up for sale down there...

Dan, Thanks for the information. It sure is a shame that someone in the US doesn't recognize the need and turn out a less refined boat with a low price tag like Mr Amato does. You shouldn't have to go across border to get one.

Jack,
Could you please give us a little summary of the two different hull configurations you mentioned, Japanese vs Mexican? I have heard of the two types, but no one discusses the differences. Also, do you know of any other Mexican builders I could contact? Thanks.
